This collection consists of handwritten personal and business papers of Berthe, Felix, Alfred, and Edgar Grima, of New Orleans, La., their descendents, as well as many others. It contains documents originating in the eighteenth through twentieth centuries. Included are slave sale documents, land transactions, mortgage agreements, wills, tax receipts, succession suit material, business and personal correspondence, newspaper clippings, as well as financial ledgers and genealogical material. Notable correspondents include W. C. C. Claiborne, Judah P. Benjamin, and General James Wilkinson. Also included are personal and business papers of John Slidell.

William C. C. Claiborne practiced law in Tennessee and became judge of the Superior Court of Tennessee in 1796. He became governor of the Territory of Mississippi in 1801 and was appointed to receive Louisiana from France in 1803. James Wilkinson was born in Maryland and served as an officer in the American Revolution. In 1783 he settled in Kentucky, where he engaged in politics, land speculation, and trade.
